IOSH - Workplace Stress: Strategic Mental Health Management

Speaking at Health and Safety Matters Live Coventry in June 2024, Christopher Davis, a Thought Leadership Manager at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), discussed the critical issue of workplace stress and mental health.

He highlighted a significant statistic from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that half of workplace ill health cases in 2022-23 were attributed to stress, depression, and anxiety, with approximately 31.5 million of 35 million lost working days related to ill health. Davis argued that while UK health and safety legislation requires organisations to conduct suitable stress risk assessments, current approaches are often reactive rather than preventative.

Davis introduced the "elastic band theory" of stress, explaining how workplace demands can stretch employees' capacity, potentially leading to burnout if not managed effectively.
