The social and economic impact of accident rates in the UK

This session was recorded at the NEBOSH Leeds Conference in March 2026. Tilly Smith from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents presents the "Safe for Lives, Stronger Nation" report, revealing that over 20,000 people die annually from accidents in the UK.

With falls being the leading cause (46% of deaths), and that accidental deaths have risen 42% over the past decade despite being entirely preventable. She emphasises that accidents are not random events but rather monitorable phenomena with clear trends, and that the majority of these fatal and disabling accidents occur at home rather than in workplaces, making it essential to prioritise accident prevention as a cross-sector health and safety issue requiring involvement from national government, local authorities, and employers.
